When the going gets tough, the zooxanthellae get going. Zooxanthellae are microscopic organisms that live with corals. They’re independent and can wander off whenever they bloody well feel like it. As ocean acidity levels rise, they tend to leave. And the poor corals are stuck behind, immovable and completely dependent on the asshole zooxanthellae. Oh, and it’s our fault too. But the zooxanthellae are just jerks.
